Protect your PC against ransomware
First, there's Windows' built-in ransomware protection. When enabled, this setting can improve PC security by making it harder to protect your files and folders.
However, it also makes it more difficult for bad actors to access your device's memory areas.
You can find the setting by searching for Protection; against Ransomware in Windows 10 or Windows 11 settings.
So after finding ransomware protection, enable the Controlled folder access option. This will prevent unauthorized applications and programs from accessing these key areas.
Finally with Ransomware Protection activated; you will greatly improve PC security. But we're not done yet.

Encrypt your files with Windows Bitlocker
However, another easy way to improve PC security is to use Windows Bitlocker. When activated; Bitlocker will help protect your files by encrypting them. Encryption links your computer's files to your Microsoft account and works with the TPM chip built into your PC.
In fact, this creates a recovery key that you can use to access your files from the Windows reset or restore screen.
However, the only downside is that Windows Bitlocker is only available on the Pro versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. However, you can find the setting under the Manage Bitlocker option in Windows settings.
Improve PC security by testing apps and files with Windows Sandbox
The third and final way to improve PC security is to use Windows Sandbox. This essentially starts a sandbox virtual machine on your computer.
It's perfect for testing apps you're not familiar with or opening files that might contain malware or other virus-like programs.
In fact you can enable Windows Sandbox from the menu; Turn Windows Features On or Off.
However once activated, you will need to restart your PC and run it as you would any other application.
It's a workaround as it means you will install programs twice if you intend to keep them. But it can improve PC security by helping you better decide which apps or files you actually want to access on your physical machine.
