One important difference is that video instant messages automatically play in the chat, with the sound muted. This means you will see the content of the video message in the chat without having to interact with it. Normal videos sent in a chat need to be clicked on before they can be played.
Additionally, instant video messages are not saved to your camera roll unless you choose to save them; they're more like throwaway messages that you don't want to keep. There is also a 60-second limit on instant video messages.
How to send an instant video message from WhatsApp
You can send an instant video message on WhatsApp quickly and easily using a similar method to the one used to send a voice note. If the feature does not appear on WhatsApp, you will need to update to the latest version of the application.
To send a WhatsApp instant video message:
- Open the Whatsapp chat where you want the video message to appear.
- Tap, but don't hold, the microphone icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- The icon should change to a Vvideo camera.
- Tap and hold the Video camera icon. You will see a countdown appear on the screen.
- If you are satisfied with using the front camera, continue holding the icon and record your video message.
- If you make a mistake, swipe left to delete the recording and try again.
- After recording your video, release the Video camera icon and the video message will be posted to the chat.
- If you want to use the rear camera to record your video or don't want to hold down the icon while recording, tap and hold the Video camera icon and swipe up until you see the To lock symbol appears.
- Now you can release the Video camera icon.
- To use the rear camera, tap Rotate camera icon.
- To stop recording, tap Recording icon.
- If you are not satisfied with your recording, tap the Trash icon to delete it.
- If you are happy, tap the To send icon to send the instant video message.
How to delete a WhatsApp instant video message
If you want to remove an instant video message from your WhatsApp chat, either because you are not satisfied with it or because it has already served its purpose, you can do so directly in the chat.
To delete a WhatsApp instant video message:
- Open the Whatsapp chat containing the instant video message.
- Tap and hold the instant video message you want to delete.
- Touch Delete.
- Make sure Instant Video Message is selected and tap the Trash icon. You can select multiple messages if you wish.
- Select Delete for everyone to remove the video from the chat for everyone in the chat group.
- Select Delete for me if you just want to remove the video from your own copy of the chat.
- A message will replace the instant video message, indicating that it has been deleted.
