The Apple Watch has been around for almost 10 years. While a lot has evolved with watchOS – and watchOS 10 has revamped the smartwatch experience – there are still simple tips and tricks that most people don't know they can take advantage of with their wearable.

That said, I've put together five very useful Apple Watch tips that everyone should know about Apple's smartwatch. Without further ado, here they are:

Find your iPhone: Losing your phone around the house is not uncommon. If you tend to forget where you put it, Apple Watch lets you find it quickly. When you open Control Center (by swiping up in watchOS 9 and pressing the side button in watchOS 10), tap the phone with the wave icon to hear your iPhone beeping nearby. To take this Apple Watch tip to the next level, if you have an iPhone 15 and an Apple Watch Series 9 or Apple Watch Ultra 2, you can use Precision Find to easily locate your iPhone.

Apple Watch can take photos: Don't laugh if someone tells you you can take photos using your Apple Watch — it's true. If you search your app library, you will find a camera icon. From there, you can control your iPhone's camera. Using your watch, you can select a timer, which camera you plan to use, as well as flash and live photo settings. The wearable even reflects what your iPhone is displaying so you can look your best before taking the photo.

Handwashing stopwatch: During the pandemic, Apple added many new features to the Apple Watch, but there's at least one you should still be using today: handwashing detection. If it's not on by default, go to your watch settings, search for “Wash your hands” and turn it on. As soon as you start washing your hands, the wearable will detect this and start a 20-second timer – which is the recommended time to clean your hands perfectly.

Unlock your Apple Watch with iPhone: iPhone users can unlock their Apple Watch models. Have you ever put your watch on your wrist and forgotten to enter the password? Do not you worry anymore. In the Watch app on your iPhone, go to Passcode and tap “Unlock with iPhone.” That said, when your iPhone is unlocked and your watch is on your wrist – within reach of your phone – your Apple Watch will unlock.

Apple Pay: Apple's payment system is not exclusive to your iPhone. Open the Watch app and then the Wallet section. Add your cards to pay using your watch. Just double-tap the side button and select your card. With watchOS 10, you can add a card directly from your watch.

Wrap up

Did you like these Apple Watch tips? The best part is that they work with almost every version of the Apple Watch available, so you don't have to worry about needing the latest smartwatch to take advantage of these functions.
