One of the new features in the AirPods Pro 2 is Adaptive Transparency, and it appears to be the type of update that Apple will make available to the first-generation AirPods Pro via the iOS 16.1 update.

Apple explained Adaptive Transparency mode during the AirPods Pro 2 segment of the iPhone 14 launch event. The feature allows the headphones to intelligently block certain sounds that exceed audio levels.

Adaptive transparency is a feature made possible by AirPods Pro's active noise cancellation (ANC) feature. The first and second AirPods Pro models support ANC, and the user can switch between noise cancellation and transparency.

With Adaptive Transparency enabled on AirPods Pro 2nd generation, users will benefit from noise cancellation when listening to loud sounds around them. The earbuds will reduce the volume once the AirPods detect the sounds.

How to turn on adaptive transparency on 1st generation AirPods Pro

For example, you might be walking down the street with transparency mode turned on. This way, you can hear nearby sounds while playing audio on AirPods Pro 2.

A nearby siren or loud construction work would temporarily trigger the noise cancellation feature on the AirPods Pro through adaptive transparency.

The feature will ensure that your ears are not exposed to loud noises that could be harmful. iOS already measures the volume of your headphones to help you adjust your listening experience. Just go to Health, To browseand then Hearing to check your audio levels.

The Adaptive Transparency feature can help you correct exposure to nearby noise. And the good news is that the first-generation AirPods Pro will also support the feature after the iOS 16.1 update.

Redditors who installed iOS 16.1 beta 3 discovered the new Adaptive Transparency mode on your devices.

After installing iOS 16.1 (beta 3 or later), put in your original AirPods Pro, go to the Definitions app and look for the AirPods menu. There, you will have to enable Adaptive Transparency.
