We already knew that the newly introduced iPhone 13 Pro models had excellent camera features. But an American ophthalmologist has put his iPhone 13 Pro Max camera to medical use to monitor the eyes of a patient who recently underwent a cornea transplant procedure.

However in a recent post on LinkedIn, Dr. Tommy Korn described how he used Macro mode to capture detailed, up-close photos of a corneal transplant patient to monitor the healing process.

Korn said he was “impressed” with the quality of the photos and said such technology “will innovate patient vision care and telemedicine.” As seen below, the ophthalmologist was able to take extremely detailed photos two days apart to see if the post-procedure abrasion was healing properly.

In fact in a separate LinkedIn post from two weeks ago, Korn highlighted key reasons why smartphone macro photography via devices like the iPhone 13 Pro can help innovate eye care.

However, the doctor explained that with the help of such advanced camera systems, patients can remotely send high-quality photo reports of the healing process that can help ophthalmologists determine whether there is a need for further treatment more accurately. According to Korn, macro photos can also help better identify whether a patient's condition requires emergency treatment.

“Indeed for emergency/urgent care doctors, macro-ocular photography can improve end-to-end medical consultations when emergency/urgent care doctors communicate with ophthalmologists about patients with emergency eye problems,” he added.

However, Professor of Othalmology and Plastic Surgery at the University of California, Bobby Korn, was also impressed with Korn's injections and said that “this can also be used for oculoplastic lesions.”

However, both professionals agreed that these smartphone camera lenses can even rival those of DSLRs.

It's unknown whether the iPhone 13 Pro models will be used more widely among medical professionals, but we know for sure that the iPhone 13 Pro's camera array certainly deserves the praise.

Finally, as we highlighted in our iPhone 13 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max, both models share the same camera system, with the only major differences being the battery and screen sizes.
