Check if Excel automatic calculation is turned on
One of the most common causes of Excel not calculating is that your worksheet's calculation options are set to manual. In this mode, cells will only calculate when you force them to do so. If Excel is not calculating automatically, it is likely that this mode has been turned on.
To enable automatic calculation in Excel: How to fix Excel automatic calculation
- Open Excel and click the button Formulas menu.
- At the Calculation section, click Calculation options.
- Ensure that Automatic is checked.
- You can also access the same options through the File menu.
- Select options at the bottom of the left menu.
- Click Formulas.
- Under Calculation options to guarantee Workbook calculation is configured to Automatic.
- If Calculation has already been set to Automatic and your formulas are still not automatically calculated, you will need to try one of the fixes below.
- Make sure you set automatic calculation to Automatic before trying the rest of the fixes on this list, as the Manual calculation mode will prevent them from working.
Check Cell Formatting
Formulas in Excel will not always calculate if the cell containing them is formatted as text. This could be the reason why your formulas are not automatically calculated in Excel.
If you create a formula in a cell that is not formatted as text and then convert it to text, Excel still automatically calculates the cell but leaves the contents in text format. However, if a cell format is set to text before you enter your formula, the cell will only display the formula and not the result.
You can easily check the format of any cell and change it to the correct format for the automatic calculation to work.
To check cell formatting in Excel:
- click on the Home menu.
- Select a cell that is not automatically calculated.
- At the Home tape, check the Numeric format at the Number section.
- If the Numeric format It is Textclick on the arrow at the end of Numeric format box.
- Select In general.
- Click on the formula in Formula Bar.
- Press To type and your cell phone should now calculate.
- The cell should recalculate as expected from now on.
Check your formulas
Another cause of formulas not recalculating can be very easy to miss. If there is a space or an apostrophe before the formula, it will not be calculated because Excel treats the entire formula as text.
This can be very difficult to detect. An empty space is not very noticeable and an apostrophe at the beginning of a formula does not appear in the cell itself. You can only see it on Formula Bar.
To check formula formatting in Excel:
- Click a cell that is not automatically calculated.
- Look in Formula Bar to see if the cell starts with an apostrophe.
- If there is, click to the right of the apostrophe and press Backspace to delete it.
- If there is no apostrophe, the problem may be due to an empty space before the formula.
- At the Formula Barclick just to the left of = (equal to) signal.
- Press Backspace a few times to make sure you removed all the spaces before your formula.
- Press To type and your cell should now recalculate as expected.
Turn off the Show formulas setting
If your cells are showing the formulas themselves instead of the results of those formulas, it may be because the show formulas setting is enabled.
This setting lets you see the formulas in the cells instead of their results, which is useful when you're creating your spreadsheet or trying to find the cause of an error.
However, when this setting is enabled, it means your formulas will not be recalculated.
To disable the show formulas feature in Excel:
- click on the Formulas menu.
- On the ribbon, check the Show Formulas button. If the button has a darker background, the setting is enabled.
- If this is the case, click the button Show Formulas button to disable the setting.
- Your cells should now automatically calculate as expected.
Why would I use manual calculation mode in Excel?
You may be wondering why there is manual calculation mode in Excel – surely you would like your formulas to calculate automatically?
There may be times, however, when manual calculation mode may be useful.
If you are working with large spreadsheets that contain a large number of formulas, automatically calculating all these formulas can take a long time and slow down your spreadsheet.
If you have a lot of changes to make, this can quickly become a bit painful.
By turning on manual calculation mode, you can make any changes you want without having to wait for Excel to recalculate all your formulas.
When you've finished making changes, you can turn automatic calculation back on, so cells only need to be recalculated once.
How to force formula calculation in manual calculation mode
If you are working in manual calculation mode, there will be times when you want your cells to be calculated.
Instead of having to switch to automatic calculation mode and back again, you can force your formulas to recalculate with a simple click.
