You may have noticed a new predictive text feature built into the latest versions of iOS. Starting in iOS 17, when you type, words appear in gray so you can press the spacebar to complete sentences more quickly. But you may want to disable this feature, predictive text, on your iPhone or iPad.

Built-in predictive text is enabled by default and is intended to help you complete sentences more easily and send messages faster.
For example, following the text you typed, you might type “What's go” and see “ing on” in light gray.

What is built-in predictive text on your iPhone?
Pressing the spacebar on your iPhone keyboard will complete the sentence. The feature is like text predictions in Microsoft Word or text prediction in Google Docs.
Note, however, that this is not the same as predictive text above the keyboard's quick typing bar.
Still, you might find the built-in predictive text annoying because it doesn't predict the right words you want to use.
Or you might find it annoying and want to turn it off. Whatever the case, we'll show you how to get rid of the built-in text predictions on your iPhone or iPad in this guide.
When you type text in the Messages app or another messaging app like the privacy-focused Signal, your iPhone or iPad will display what it thinks you'll type next.
It displays the predicted words as light gray text in the message field. If you are satisfied with the predicted text, you can click the spacebar to fill it in.
Turn off built-in predictive text on your iPhone or iPad
Turning off the built-in predictive text feature requires looking into your iPhone or iPad's settings and finding the right button to turn it off.
- Open settings in your iPhone or iPad.
- Swipe down and select In general of the menu.
- Then scroll down and select Keyboard from the list of items.
- Find it Show predictions in-line setting and turn off the switch.
- Close the Settings app and start using any messaging app you want.
That's all there is to do. For example, if you open the Messages app and start typing to one of your contacts, you will no longer see the built-in predictive text.
It's also important to note that you can also disable predictive text from the keyboard above if you prefer an even cleaner typing experience.
Once disabled, you will no longer see text predictions displayed above the keyboard in the quick typing bar as you type.
How to disable built-in predictive text on your iPhone
If you want to get rid of the built-in predictive text on your iPhone or iPad, you can follow the steps above. If you want to re-enable it, go back to your keyboard settings and toggle the Show predictions in-line call again.
Built-in predictive text can help you type common words and phrases more easily by tapping the space bar. However, if it isn't predicting what you want or you find it annoying, you can disable it in Settings.
