Whether it's a business or personal call, you can be anywhere or have almost everything behind you without being distracted from the video chat.

However, Portrait mode will not be available if you switch to the rear camera on your iPhone. You can enable Portrait mode in FaceTime in two different ways:

Turn on portrait mode before a FaceTime call

So if you're the one making the FaceTime call, you can prepare in advance by enabling Portrait mode.

  1. First open the FaceTime app and swipe to display the Control Center on your iPhone as you normally would.
  2. Then tap Video effects in the upper left corner.
  3. Finally, tap the icon Portrait to activate Portrait mode.

You can then swipe out of Control Center, return to FaceTime, and make your call.

Select portrait mode during a call

If you are receiving a FaceTime video call, you can easily enable Portrait mode during the call.

  • Tap the camera preview thumbnail in the corner.
  • Tap the icon Portrait in the upper left corner of the enlarged view that is displayed. You should then immediately see the background blur and the icon will be outlined in white.
  • So you can return the camera view to a thumbnail by tapping the arrows in the top right corner.
  • You can then continue your FaceTime call without worrying about what's in the background for your caller to see. If you decide to blur the background, just tap the thumbnail and then tap the Portrait icon to turn Portrait mode off. Portrait mode is activated when the icon is arranged in white and deactivated when the icon is arranged in black.
