Basic gestures

Starting with basic gestures. Your new iPhone XR no longer has a home button, meaning you have to do it by gesture. Here's how to navigate it:

  • Notification Center: slide your finger from top to bottom in the top left corner;
  • Control Center: slide your finger from top to bottom in the top right corner (note that this is where you can see the battery level in numerals);
  • Return to home: swipe up from the bottom of the screen;
  • View open applications: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and stop mid-gesture to see all open apps.
  • Close an application: With all the app previews showing, throw an app up

Quickly switch between apps

Now that you know all the basic iPhone gestures, there's another tip: You can quickly switch between apps. Imagine you are on WhatsApp and need to go back to Safari, which you just opened, to confirm an address.

In the bottom corner of the screen, swipe to the side (from left to right) to open the last app. If you keep doing this, it will return to other recently used applications. The same goes for right to left if you're fast.

Reachability

The new iPhones have big screens. The iPhone XS is 5.8 inches, the iPhone XR is 6.1 inches, and the iPhone XS Max is 6.5 inches. Therefore, you may not be able to reach the top right corner of the cell phone with just one hand. To make things easier, Apple has introduced the “Reachability” function since the iPhone 6.

In Settings, go in General, Accessibility and activate the Reachability. To use, in the bar of the four main apps, swipe from top to bottom, half of the screen goes down. So you can access the Control Center Or the Notification Center more easily.

Control Center

You know how to use Control Center, but did you know that you can customize which applications appear there? For example, you can give quick access to Low Power Mode, Apple TV control, screen recording, etc.

In Settings, go in Control Center It is Customize Controls. Add the ones you find most useful and remove the ones you don't intend to use. To access it, just slide your finger from top to bottom in the top right corner.

3D Touch

The iPhones XS and XS Max feature 3D Touch. Basically, this function allows a new gesture when pressing a little harder on links, photos, Instagram profiles or emails. For example, if you store apps in folders, when you press a folder a little harder, you can see which apps have notifications to see. In other words, start pressing hard on links, apps, photos, emails and discover new possibilities.

The iPhone XR does not have 3D Touch, but even so, Apple allows similar gestures with Live Photos and in the Control Center. On the screen brightness bar, in the center, touch and hold your finger on it. A new tab will open with Night Shift and True Tone. The same goes for other Control Center icons.

Search in photos

iOS has allowed you to search for photos for a while now, but in iOS 12 it got even better. In the “Search” bar, you can search by Moments, People, Places, Groups and Categories. Try searching for “June 2014”, “cat”, “Paris”, “documents” or a friend’s name to find photos.

Focus Adjustment / Studio Lighting

Speaking of photos, the camera on the new iPhones has become even better and the A12 Bionic processor helps your clicks to have even more detail. On both the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max it is possible to use Portrait Mode, which is when you focus on the person in the foreground and the background is blurred.

The new thing is that after clicking, you can tap “Edit” on the photo and change the blur, making it more visible or practically blur-free. Another function, which already existed on previous iPhones, is “Studio Lighting”, which applies different light filters to your face.

Also in “Edit,” swipe between five modes on the iPhone XS or three modes on the iPhone XR. The same goes for the front camera.

Live Photo

This is a new feature that has been on the market since the iPhone 6s, just like 3D Touch, but it's worth reinforcing. When you open the camera, see if there is a little yellow ball like the one in the photo. If it is turned on, when you click, the iPhone will store three seconds of that scene.

While you can relive the moment the photo was taken using 3D Touch in your camera roll, you can also create a GIF with Live Photo or increase its exposure. Just swipe up from the bottom of a photo and look at the options.

Setting up (second face in) Face ID

Face ID is the new unlocking method for current iPhones. Just look at your iPhone to unlock the screen, pay a bill with Apple Pay, or fill in a password. If you didn't go through the process of activating Face ID when installing your cell phone, just go to Settings, Face ID and Code and configure your face.

In the new iOS, you can set a second face. This actually means that if you tend to wear very heavy makeup or really like sunglasses, you can set up an “alternative face” so that it continues to work as well as when you don't have any interference on your face.

Another thing you can do, but which reduces the security of your cell phone, is to remove “Require Attention for Face ID”, as, by default, you only unlock your iPhone if you are looking at it. If you disable this function, just point the phone at your face.

How to (un)block notifications on the locked screen

Thanks to Face ID, Apple doesn't show app pushes you've received in Notification Center. So the person who takes your cell phone may even know that you received a WhatsApp notification, but they won't know from who. Only you, when you look at the screen, will find out.

If you want to change this, go to Settings, Notifications and Previews and select “Always” to always display the content of messages or “Never”, so that even when you unlock your cell phone, the content does not appear in the notification.

Creating your Memoj

Another new feature of the True Depth system on the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max are Animojis. The Face ID system recognizes different points on your face and that's why Apple thought it was a good idea to create animated emojis. There are several of them and recently the company also introduced Memojis, which are animated emojis of yours. With iOS 12.1, you can have several different Memojis.

To create one, go to iMessage, tap a message, and in the bottom right corner, select the monkey. Then swipe up from the bottom until you open all the Animojis. In +, start creating your Memoji.

Setting Up Apple Pay / Quick Access

Apple Pay is Apple's mobile payment system. Here, you find out everything about it. It is now possible to configure Bradesco, Banco do Brasil and Itaú cards. You can add credit, debit or multiple on Visa and Mastercard (you need to check with your bank).

In Wallet, tap the + in the upper right corner. Add your card. Then check the card registration in your bank's application. To start using it, just double-tap the side button (the one in the right corner). A screen opens with your card and Face ID automatically authenticates your face.

Double-tapping is a good option to see your boarding pass for a flight, for example.

Changing your primary Apple Pay card

Now that you've learned how to set up Apple Pay, you may have set up a card that you use less before setting up your primary card. In Settings, go to Wallet and Apple Pay and in “Transaction Defaults”, tap Default Card and select which one you want to use.

Turn off your iPhone

Turning off your cell phone has always been a simple task: just hold down the power button. But since the iPhone X, the power button is now called “Side Button” and only it can lock the phone or call Siri on its own.

If you want to turn off your iPhone XR, XS or XS Max, hold the side button together with the volume button. Then, slide your finger to turn off the device. To turn it on, just hold down the side button for a few seconds.

How Screen Time works

Screen Time is a function that appeared in iOS 12. In it, you receive a weekly report with the time you spent on the iPhone. This is Apple's attempt to make users aware of how much time they spend looking at their phone screen. To discover this function, go to Settings and Usage Time.

In it, you can set a period in which you will not use the device and only important messages and calls are notified. You can also limit the use of certain applications or block content in Privacy.

Ease with AirDrop

AirDrop is one of the coolest features on Apple devices. This is why you can share a photo with a friend, without using the internet, and with its full resolution. First of all, check if your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on in the Control Center (tip: leaving them off won't make your battery last longer).

In Settings, go to General and AirDrop and allow “Everyone” to message you. Now, when selecting a photo, for example, tap the icon in the bottom left corner where it says “AirDrop”, see if your friend's or work's iPhone, iPad or Mac appears. Tap to share and that's it. The same goes for files, links, music, etc.

Copy and Paste between devices

Starting with iPhone 5 and 2015 MacBooks (with the latest software), you can copy text messages or photos and paste them to another device. And the function is as simple as the name.

On iPad, select a link and tap “Copy.” On your iPhone, in WhatsApp, press “Paste” in the message field and that’s it.

How to take and delete a print

To take a screenshot on the iPhone XR, just press the side button and the volume button at the same time. A preview appears in the lower left corner. Tap it. From there, you can make a small edit and send it to a colleague via WhatsApp, Twitter or email. After sending, you can choose to delete the screenshot or save it to your camera roll.
