Samsung Galaxy Watch bets on a solar charging bracelet.

When the first modern, full-featured smartwatches were; launched almost eight years ago, they were ridiculed for the need for daily recharging.

Even Apple's first Apple Watch was; criticized for it and the smartwatch industry hasn't exactly made leaps forward in battery life.

Mirroring the smartphone market, smartwatch manufacturers have turned to indirect strategies to reduce; power consumption or speed up charging, but a Samsung patent wants to leave this debatable; making the smartwatch charge constantly, even while it's on your wrist.

Smartwatches have even bigger battery problems than smartphones because of their smaller sizes.

In fact Smartwatches have become more powerful and are adding new sensors that practically cancel out any energy efficiency improvements that new processors and software might bring.

Although there are ways to reduce battery consumption through secondary processors or displays; low power consumption, it would still be better if the devices did not need to be recharged, or at least every night.

However, a newly granted patent registered in 2019 reveals Samsung's almost ingenious solution.

So in essence, the smartwatch is always charging, or at least has backup batteries that are always on; being charged and ready to go when the smartwatch's main power runs low.

These batteries are located in the belts and are; constantly charged by sunlight or even fluorescent light.

According to LetsGoDigital, the patent involves a polymer with quantum dots, the same technology; of quantum dots it uses for its QLED TVs and some new laptops.

Yet they capture the light that is; passed to solar cells, which then convert it into electrical energy.

Structures are located on both sides of the clock case so that one or both can receive light; regardless of what the smartwatch is; used.

While the technology definitely looks appealing, there's no guarantee Samsung will use it in the Galaxy; Watch 5 next year or on any Galaxy Watch.

We can only hope so, as it could be a more effective solution to the battery problem at least; until more advanced battery technologies are; developed.
