But Apple is rumored to be working on an update that could take the laptop to the next level.
At this point, it looks like the new MacBook Air will launch in 2022. That said, it may not be called the MacBook Air – a recent rumor suggests it could be called “MacBook”. Interested in getting one for yourself? Here's everything we know about it so far.
New MacBook Air design
According to most rumors, Apple will completely redesign the MacBook Air for 2022.
If the leaked renders are to be believed, the new MacBook Air will be something of a mix between the new MacBook Pro, the new iMac and the previous generation MacBook Air.
Starting from the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air can get a new edge-to-edge display with a notch along with MagSafe.
From the iMac, the laptop can receive white frames and a chassis that can come in various colors. And from the previous generation MacBook Air, the laptop will likely have the super-slim build that has made the Air famous over the years.
According to leaks from Jon Prosser, the new MacBook Air will be thinner and lighter than the previous generation's mode, but will ditch the tapered design in favor of a uniform thickness.
The leaked renders also show a laptop with MagSafe. MagSafe has been missing from the MacBook Air for a few years now.
And they show that the laptop may have a white keyboard. In renderings, this doesn't look bad – although it can accumulate dirt over time.
We'll have to wait and see if these renderings end up being accurate.
Another rumor suggests that the MacBook Air could come in a few different sizes.
According to the latest report from Display Supply Chain CONsultants, Apple is readying a 15-inch MacBook Air, on top of the new 13-inch model.
New MacBook Air screen
As noted, the MacBook Air could get an edge-to-edge display with a notch. However, this screen probably won't be as sophisticated as the Mini-LED display found on the latest MacBook Pro.
That said, some rumors indicate that the computer will still offer some type of Mini-LED screen.
It is also entirely possible that the Apple Don't include a notch on the new MacBook Air. With white bezels, the notch will likely be a little more noticeable, so Apple may want to avoid it.
Performance of the new MacBook Air
The current generation MacBook Air offers an M1 chip, which is Apple's first-generation computer processor. It's a great chip, but after releasing the M1 Pro and M1 Max, many are looking to what's next for Apple Silicon.
Recent rumors indicate that the new MacBook Air will come with Apple's next-generation M2 chip, which will also power a new entry-level MacBook Pro and potentially the next iMac.
The M2 is expected to be an eight-core chip, like the M1. But, each core will likely be faster, and the laptop could have improved graphics with eight GPU cores or 10.
That's up from the seven or eight GPU cores available on the M1. We'll have to wait and see if it's offered on the 2022 MacBook Air.
Price and release date of the new MacBook Air
We expect the MacBook Air to be; launching sometime in 2022. However, it remains to be seen exactly when it will come.
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the device could be; released in the second or third quarter.
In other words, it is possible that it is; announced at Apple's annual WWDC developer conference.
This was recently corroborated by Twitter leaker LeaksApplePro, who said the MacBook Air and Mac Mini will be; released at WWDC. WWDC is scheduled to take place on June 6th.
We'll have to wait and see – it's possible; released sooner or later. Apple usually holds a Mac-focused event in October. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also noted that the laptop should be; launched in 2022, in its Power On newsletter.
